Cleaning and Care

Silver:    By far the best way of preserving the fresh appearance of silver is to keep it in use. Hiding it away somehow doesn’t do the trick.   If you use your tableware then there’s nothing wrong with putting it in the dishwasher – with two provisos:      

                                    make sure that there is no steel or copper in the same load

                                    leave out the salt.

Having said that some special cleaning will be necessary from time to time.   In the short run the occasional rub with a silver cloth works wonders in warding off tarnish.  In the longer term, perhaps 2 or 3 times a year depending on the environment, a more thorough clean with a foam cleaner will restore the lustre of your silver.  Just follow the manufacturers simple instructions.

Horn and silver   Despite considerable strength and flexibility horn will not withstand the heat of the dishwasher.  Hand wash table pieces  in hand-hot water.  The high polish on the horn will make drying them a simple matter.  Treat the silver to the silver cloth and the occasional foam rub, while being careful not to discolour any light horn with the silver foam.

Satinised silver   We created matt, satinised finishes with something very similar to a scouring pad and suggest that the best way of refreshing pieces treated in this way is to use a similar pad with a little soapy water.                                                              

Warning:   If the piece you are refreshing is gilded inside do not be tempted to scour the gilding too.

Repairs.
